Are you worried about a low AMH?

Are you worried about low AMH levels and concerned time is running out for you to have a baby? If you are only in your late twenties or early thirties should you be worried? What does AMH (Anti Mullerian Hormone) really mean? It is believed that this is a good indicator of your ovarian reserve. This is based on the idea that women are born with their lifetime supply of eggs and if they have a low AMH and therefore a low ovarian reserve, they will be running out of eggs soon.
Let’s assume this belief is correct.
What does this mean, for example, for a woman between 32 to 34 years of age, who has an AMH of 1?
It means that she will go into menopause at the VERY earliest, at the age of 42 years. In other words, she still has about 10 years left to conceive. No need to worry.
What else does it mean?
It means that she will not be a very good candidate for IVF as she will most likely not respond very well to the hormones. So this is important to know.
What about a high AMH?
That’s a different situation altogether, this is a good indicator that the women has PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). There are now new suggestions that the belief of women being born with their lifetime supply of eggs is incorrect, but further research is needed.
